Stella Bhawanie received her PhD in Clinical Psychology from Fielding Graduate University in California and is currently a Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying) with the Ontario College of Psychotherapists.
Stella acquired her clinical training and experience in private health care settings and within government. Within the private health care arena, and working primarily from a cognitive-behavioural model, Stella has conducted assessments and provided psychotherapy to address such issues as depression, anxiety, adjustment disorders, and chronic pain from work-related injuries. She also has experience treating those with substance dependence, anger/violence issues, emotional dysregulation, depression/anxiety, and sexual offending. Stella provided individual therapy to treat mood/anxiety, trauma, and psychosocial adjustment, and group treatment such as the intensive substance abuse program.
At the government level, she has conducted assessments of offenders’ risk to re-offend, provided psychotherapy to offenders in crisis, assessed offenders’ risk for self-injurious behaviours or self-destruction, and provided treatment interventions to offenders to facilitate their reintergration into society. Stella also worked in a weekend jail rehabilitation programme assessing readiness and fit for community work programs for provincial offenders instead of serving jail time.
